With a week of frantic transfer activity remaining on this transfer window our distinguished correspondent Peter Law, who has forgotten more about African football than the rest of knew, has compiled this essential guide to transfers of African internationals for us.

Kolo TOURÉ – Defender – (Ivory Coast) Manchester City to Liverpool. 2 year deal – free.

Arouna KONÉ – Attacker – (Ivory Coast) Wigan to Everton. 3 year deal – £5m.

Ahmed EL MOHAMMADY – Defender – (Egypt) Sunderland to Hull City. 3 year deal – undisclosed.

Adel TAARABT – Midfielder – (Morocco). QPR to Fulham – 1 year loan.

Victor WANYAMA – Midfielder – (Kenya) Celtic to Southampton. 4 year deal – £12.5m. He is the most expensive transfer in Scottish history.

Amine LINGANZI – Midfielder – (Republic of Congo) Accrington Stanley to Gillingham. 2 year deal – undisclosed. Linganzi was born in Algeria, but has 2 caps for Congo.

Wilfried BONY – Attacker – (Ivory Coast) Vitesse Arnhem to Swansea City. 4 year deal – £12m. This was the record fee for Swansea, yet looks a bargain after his achievement in the Netherlands last season.

Marouane CHAMAKH – Attacker – (Morocco) Arsenal to Crystal Palace. 1 year deal – undisclosed.

Romauld BOCO – Midfielder – (Bénin) Accrington Stanley to Plymouth Argyle. 1 year deal – free.

Yannick SAGBO – Attacker – (Ivory Coast) Evian to Hull City. 2 year deal – undisclosed. The French-born player was nominated by Bénin to play against Angola in 2008, but two years later represented Ivory Coast. He had previously played for the Ivorians at Under-23 level

Djamel ABDOUN – Midfielder – (Algeria) Olympiakos to Nottingham. Forest 3 year deal – undisclosed (believed to be around £1.55m). The French-born player represented the country of his birth at Under Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 level before his international future to Algeria at full level.

Bongani KHUMALO – Defender – (South Africa) Tottenham Hotspur to Doncaster Rovers. 1 year deal – loan.

Albert ADOMAH – Midfielder – (Ghana) Bristol City to Middlesboro. 3 year deal – £1m. Born in England Adomah has played for the Black Stars.

Kamil ZAYATTE – Defender/Midfielder – (Guinea) Istanbul BB to Sheffield Wednesday. 2 year deal – free.

Essaïd BELKALEM – Defender – (Algeria) Granada to Watford. 1 year deal – loan.


Aloys NONG – Attacker – (Cameroun) Left Belgian club Mons for Levante. 3 year deal – undisclosed, but believed to be under €500,000. He has never represented his country and at 29-years-old it seems unlikely now.

Bobley ANDERSON – Attacking Midfielder – (Ivory Coast) Wydad Casablanca to Málaga. 5 year deal – £880,000.He has represented his country at Under-23 level and been called up to the full international squad, but has yet to play.


Pierre-Emerick AUBAMEYANG – Attacker – (Gabon) AS Saint-Étienne to Borussia Dortmund. 5 year deal – £11m. He scored a hat trick on his Bundesliga début.

Jacques ZOUA – Attacker – (Cameroun) FC Basle to SV Hamburg. 3 year deal – Undisclosed.

Cédric MAKIADI – Midfielder – (Democratic Republic of Congo) Freiburg to Werder Bremen. 3 year deal – free (release clause exercised).

Karim MATMOUR – Attacking Midfielder – (Algeria) Eintracht Frankfurt to Kaiserslautern. 2 year deal – Undisclosed.The French-born player chose to play for Algeria.


Ishak BELFODIL – Attacker – (Algeria) Parma to Internazionale di Milano. 5 year deal – 50% co-ownership between Inter and Parma. For € 10m plus loans of Antonio Cassano and Matias Silvestre. Belfodil played from Under-17 to Under-20 level for France before making his début for Algeria this month.

(Gervais Lombe Yao Kouassi) GERVINHO – Attacker – (Ivory Coast) Arsenal to AS Roma. 4 year deal – £8m.

Mehdi BENATIA – Defender – (Morocco) Udinese to AS Roma. 5 year deal – €13.5m. He played at Under-18 level for France, but the French-born player opted to play for Morocco at full level.

Afriye ACQUAH – Midfielder – (Ghana) Hoffenheim to Parma. 1 year deal – loan with option to buy.

Isaac COFIE – Midfielder – (Ghana) Chievo to Genoa. Return from loan with co-ownership deal from last season.

Moussa KONATÉ – Attacker – (Senegal) Krasnodar to Genoa. 1 year deal – loan.


Siaka TIÉNÉ – Defender – (Ivory Coast) Paris Saint-Germain to Montpellier. 2 year deal – undisclosed.

Modou SOUGOU – Attacking Midfielder – (Senegal) Olympique Marseille to Évian Thonaon Gaillard. 1 year deal – loan.

Saber KHELIFA – Midfielder/Attacker – (Tunisia) Évian Thonaon Gaillard to Olympique Marseille. 4 year deal – undisclosed.


Chris SAMBA – Defender – (Republic of Congo) QPR to Anzhi Machachkala. 3 year deal – £12.5m.

Mbark BOUSSOUFA – Attacker – (Morocco) Anzhi Machachkala to Spartak Moscow. 3 year deal – €15m. The Dutch-born player opted to pledge his international allegiance to Morocco in 2006.

Mohamed RABIU – Midfielder – (Ghana) Evian to Kuban Krasnodar. 3 year deal – €2.6m.


Aurélien CHEDJOU – Defender – (Cameroun) Lille to Galatasaray. 4 year deal – €6.3m.

Taye TAIWO – Defender – (Nigeria) AC Milan to Bursaspor. 3 year deal – free.

John UTAKA – Midfielder/Attacker – (Nigeria) Montpellier to Sivasspor. 2 year deal – free.

Emmanuel EMENIKE – Attacker – (Nigeria) Spartak Moscow to Fenerbahçe. 4 year deal – €13m.


Younès BELHANDA – Midfielder/Attacker – (Morocco). Montpellier to Dinamo Kyiv. 5 year deal – believed to be €10m. He also played at Under-20 level for France.

Dieudonné MBOKANI – Attacker – (Democratic Republic of Congo) Anderlecht to Dinamo Kyiv. 4 year deal – undisclosed.


Giovanni SIO – Attacker – (Ivory Coast) Wolfsburg to Basle. 4 year deal – undisclosed. Born in France Sio represented France at Under-15, Under-16, Under-17 and Under-18 level. He was also called up by Ivory Coast at Under-20 level before playing at full international level for the African nation.

South Africa

Kennedy MWEENE – Goalkeeper – (Zambia) Free State Stars to Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League. 3 year deal – almost €438,000. Mweene is one of very few goalkeepers to score at international level and do so in a major tournament.

Dové WOMÉ – Midfielder – (Togo) Free State Stars to Mamelodi Sundowns. His first option of a move to England didn’t happen and the duration and cost of his transfer have not been released.
